Teething is a significant milestone in your baby’s development, often marked by sleepless nights, drooling smiles, and an eager desire to chew on everything in sight. Understanding the teething process can help parents better support their child through this phase with patience and care.

What Is Teething?
Teething is the process by which an infant’s first set of teeth—called primary teeth or baby teeth—emerge through the gums. This typically begins between 4 to 7 months of age, although it can vary from baby to baby.

Signs Your Baby Is Teething
- Increased drooling
- Chewing on fingers, toys, or anything within reach
- Irritability or fussiness
- Swollen, tender gums
- Changes in sleep or appetite
Tips to Soothe a Teething Baby
- Cold washcloth or teething ring: Let your baby chew on a clean, cool cloth or chilled (not frozen) teething ring.
- Gently massage the gums: Use a clean finger to apply light pressure on sore gums.
- Use teething toys: Soft silicone or rubber teething toys can offer comfort.
- Distraction and cuddles: Sometimes all they need is extra love and comfort
- Teething gels – I am not a big fan of teething gels [i never used it for my babies ].But if your baby refuses to feed, eat or drink you can use the over the counter teething Gel[check for the allergy before using ] .Always remember, its just a numbing cream, numbing the area for few minutes.

Baby Dental Care Basics
Even before the first tooth appears, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene:
- Clean gums daily with a soft, damp cloth.
- Brush teeth as soon as they appear with a small, soft-bristled finger brush and a smear of baby toothpaste .[I personally just brush babys teeth with finger brush and water till only front teeth are there ].Since the babies dont know how to spit ,I would advised you to wipe off all the toothpaste after brushing .
- Once the posterior or back teeth have erupted, the finger brushes are kind of useless specially for upper back teeth. Start using a baby tooth brush with handle ,to better brush the posterior teeth .
- Schedule the first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months after the first tooth erupts

When to Consult a Pediatric Dentist
Call your dentist if:
- Your baby has a fever, rash, or diarrhea while teething.
- Teeth appear crooked or out of order.[Spacing in baby teeth is considered normal & good]
- You notice any white or brown spots on the teeth (signs of decay).

Teething can be tough on babies—and parents—but it’s also an exciting step in your child’s growth. With a little patience and care, you’ll both make it through with plenty of smiles.
