We all know the struggle — it’s bedtime, and suddenly your child transforms into a world-class negotiator:
“Five more minutes!”
“I’m too tired!”
“Do I have to brush tonight?”
If you’ve been there, you’re not alone[believe me I have to deal with three diffent brains of 3 different age groups :-)] . Brushing can feel like a chore for kids, but the good news is — it doesn’t have to! With a few creative tricks, you can turn brushing time into a fun, positive routine your child actually looks forward to.
Here’s how to make brushing fun and set up healthy dental habits for life:
🌈 1. Let Them Pick Their Gear
This idea always work for me 🙂 .
Kids love feeling independent! Take them shopping (in person or online) and let them pick:
✅ A toothbrush in their favorite color or with their favorite character (think superheroes, princesses, animals).
✅ A kid-friendly toothpaste — many come in fun flavors like bubblegum, strawberry, or watermelon.
✅ A special rinse cup or holder — small touches make it feel theirs.
🎵 2. Turn Brushing Into a Dance Party
Make brushing a party! Play a two-minute song (the ideal brushing time) and dance along while brushing together. There are even toothbrushing songs and apps designed for kids that make the time fly.
👉 Pro tip: Let your child choose the song to keep them excited.
🐻 3. Use a Toothbrushing Chart
Kids love earning rewards! Create a simple toothbrushing chart where they can put a sticker each time they brush.
✅ After a week or two of consistent brushing, reward them with a small prize or special activity (like an extra bedtime story or choosing the weekend movie)
👨👩👧👦 4. Brush Together
Kids learn best by watching you! Brush your teeth alongside them — show them it’s just part of the routine, not a punishment. It also gives you a chance to model good technique (and maybe improve yours too!).
📱 5. Try a Brushing App
There are tons of free apps designed to make brushing fun, with timers, songs, animations, and even virtual pets that need their teeth brushed. A little screen time can actually help here![ I personally never used them since the above 4 methods did their job quite well 🙂 ]
💡 Final Tips
✔ Keep it positive — avoid turning brushing into a fight. If your child resists, stay calm and try again in a few minutes.
✔ Celebrate small wins — even if they brush for just a minute, praise the effort and work up to the full two minutes.
✔ Visit the dentist regularly — it helps kids understand why brushing matters.
🌟 Healthy Habits Start Early
Making brushing fun isn’t just about avoiding daily battles — it’s about helping your child build habits that will keep their smile healthy for life. With a little creativity, patience, and playfulness, you can turn those two minutes into a moment you both enjoy. Trust me, time flies and you are making memories for your life time 🙂 .
Happy brushing! 🪥✨
